Abstract
Individuals who develop problems with gambling have
a major impact on the quality of life of those who are
closely associated with them, generally whánau members
and significant others. Patterns of behaviour are often
passed on from one generation to another, and engagement
in gambling is no exception. The impact of gambling
on the health and well-being of a whánau is discussed
in this paper as well as the different strategies whánau
members undertake. The whánau may include the person
who has an issue with gambling, or individuals within
the whánau who try to manage the situation, through,
for example, protecting finances, and caring for those
who are vulnerable, such as children and grandchildren.
Exploratory qualitative research is presented with themes
covering the degree of knowledge whánau members have
of signs and symptoms of problem gambling and different
strategies taken by whánau members to address the
situation. A model of the development of gambling into
an addiction is presented based on information obtained
from qualitative interviews.
