Abstract
An insight into research by Mäori academics to
address language and culture loss is discussed. How might
Mäori researchers connect cultural fragments to advance
Mäori communities within mainstream New Zealand
society is the focus. Ngä Pae o te Märamatanga, New
Zealand’s Mäori Centre of Research Excellence employs
a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional approach to
facilitating high quality research by Mäori researchers
from a range of discipline areas in a range of Crown, Mäori
and private institutions. Mäori and western discourses
are integrated to produce new approaches to affect better
outcomes for Mäori in education, health, science and the
economy. Funding, research and training provided for
Mäori by Mäori develops experience, understanding,
knowledge and collaboration among researchers in
different disciplines. The Centre’s strategic focus to
facilitate Mäori access to western discourses, institutions,
service provisions and finance contributes to participation
by Mäori in society and the economy, ultimately Mäori
development and advancement. Examples of some key
initiatives implemented in 2003-2004 are discussed to
demonstrate the collaboration and unity required across
the diverse disciplines in order to successfully synthesise
Mäori and western knowledge and traditions.
