Voices Beyond the Pae
Abstract
Ki te ao Māori ko te pae te tuarā whakatere, kakati
kaupapa. I tipu ake te mahi toi i te tauira o te pae. Ko
tēnei tuhituhi e hautu ana i te whakaaro ko te pae hei
whakapuaki i te pū manawa, aha atu i te mahi toi.
Rokohanga atu ka pupū ake te reo tāuhu mai tētahi
pae ki tētahi pae. Ko te hua mai o tēnei momo reo
tāuhu te kawenata hei tātari i tā te Māori titiro i āna
tikanga.
For Māori the pae is a zone of demarcation and
negotiation. Māori art evolves out of a negotiation of
the pae. This paper proposes that the pae is an
inevitable spatial domain that must be negotiated to
rationalise one's position as a Māori artist. Invariably,
voices from beyond the pae generate tensions in the
transition from one side of this domain to the other.
These voices and the tensions generated will be
examined through a consideration of instances of
Māori cultural representation.
